1958: "When robots and their functions are occasionally discussed, one usually thinks of constructions that bear the shape of a human or an animal... It is entirely up to man whether these novelties are applied for the salvation or the ruin of mankind." From Roboter Schaltungen (1958) by A.H. Bruinsma.
Constructed by A.H. Bruinsma for Philips in 1957, Cyber (the dog) was created as a physical thesis on Cybernetics. Bruinsma wanted to prove that complex, life-like behavior could be generated from relatively simple electronic feedback loops.
The robot used acoustic radar to detect objects. When an object was detected, the robot would stop, bark for about 3 seconds, and reverse. If its tail came into contact with another object while backing up, it would move forward again.
